FIX: Windows Media Player 9 Series uses a proxy server although Group Policy is set to use None

SYMPTOMS

Although you set Group Policy to use None for the proxy server in Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series, and although the user interface (UI) in the player appears correctly, you receive an error message. The proxy server that was previously set is returned.

For Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) streaming on a default installation of Windows Media Player, this proxy server setting is the same as the proxy server settings of the browser.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the underlying network code still uses the proxy server that was specified before Group Policy was set to None.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next release that contains this hotfix.
