SYMPTOMS

When you try to save a document by using a program that uses the Save As feature of the common dialog box, you cannot save the document. This problem may occur in some programs, such as WordPad or Notepad, when you use the following method to save a file:
  1. On the File menu, click Save As.
  2. In the Save in list, click a location.
Additionally, you may receive the following error message:
This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.
If you click OK, you receive the following error message:
Not enough memory available to complete this operation. Quit one or more applications to increase available memory, and then try again.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if all the following conditions are true:
  • The "Hide My Network Places icon on desktop" user policy is enabled in the local Group Policy settings.
  • The "Prevent access to drives from My Computer" user policy is enabled and uses the Restrict C drive only option.
  • You have previously saved a document from a program such as WordPad or Notepad to a network file share.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, turn off the local Group Policy settings that are described in the "Cause" section. To do this, follow these steps.
  1. Click Start, click Run, type MMC, and then click OK.
  2. Click Console and then click Add/Remove Snap-in.
  3. In the Add/Remove Snap-in dialog box, click Add.
  4. In the Add Standalone Snap-in list, click Group Policy, and then click Add.
  5. In the Group Policy Object window, click Finish.
  6. Click Close, and then click OK.
  7. Expand Local Computer Policy, expand User Configuration, and then expand Administrative Templates.
  8. Click Desktop.
  9. In the right pane, right-click Hide My Network Places icon on desktop, and then click Properties.
  10. Click Not Configured, and then click OK.
  11. Expand Windows Components, and then click Windows Explorer.
  12. In the right pane, right-click Prevent access to drives from My Computer, and then click Properties.
  13. Click Not Configured, and then click OK.
  14. Quit the Local Computer Policy MMC snap-in.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
