Internet Explorer Maintenance-related Group Policy results are not displayed correctly in Group Policy Management Console on a Windows Vista-based computer

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You configure the Internet Explorer Maintenance Group Policy settings in an Active Directory domain or on a client computer.
  • You start Group Policy Management Console (GPMC) on a Windows Vista-based client computer.
  • You view the Group Policy results on the Settings tab.
In this scenario, the Group Policy settings for a Windows Vista-based client computer are not displayed correctly. However, the settings are successfully applied to the client computer.

Note When you stat GPMC on a Windows XP-based computer or on a Windows Server 2003-based computer, the settings are displayed correctly.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, run Rsop.msc to view the settings on the Windows Vista-based computer.

Note Rsop.msc displays the settings that are applied to a single client computer. Rsop.msc does not display settings from the domain perspective. If you want to configure or to view the settings for the whole domain Group Policy object (GPO), you must run GPMC on a Windows XP-based computer or on a Windows Server 2003-based computer.

GPMC is a scriptable Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in. GPMC provides a single administrative tool for managing Group Policy across an enterprise.

Originally, GPMC was provided as a separate downloadable component for Windows XP and for Windows Server 2003. GPMC is directly integrated into the release version of Windows Vista. GPMC is the standard tool for managing Group Policy and the Local Group Policy Editor.

Steps to reproduce the problem

  1. On a domain controller, start Group Policy Object Editor.
  2. Expand User Configuration, expand Windows Settings, expand Internet Explorer Maintenance, and then click Security.
  3. Click to select the Import the current security zones and privacy settings check box, and then click Modify Settings.
  4. Click Import the current security zones and privacy settings.
  5. If you are prompted to import settings, click Continue.
  6. Click Modify Settings.
  7. Click Custom Level, and then click Prompt under Download signed ActiveX controls.
  8. Apply this Group Policy setting to client computers.
  9. Start Group Policy Management Console on a Windows Vista-based client computer.
  10. On the Settings tab, view the Group Policy results for the Windows Vista-based client computer. The Download signed ActiveX controls setting is enabled.
