ERROR_DS_INVALID_GROUP_TYPE This problem occurs in any application that tries to add cross-domain objects to groups on a non-GC domain controller. For example, the installation of Data Protection Manager (DPM) is unsuccessful because of the problem that is described in this article.Notes
CAUSEHotfix 923354 introduces an unnecessary check for cross-domain group membership. RESOLUTIONHotfix informationA supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix. WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem, use one of the following methods. Method 1Make sure that the domain controller that has hotfix 923354 installed hosts the GC role.Method 2Run the operation on a Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1-based GC or non-GC server that does not have hotfix 923354 installed.STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. MORE INFORMATIONIn Windows Server 2003, the Net.exe process also uses the NetLocalGroupAddMembers function.
