Symptom

On a computer that is running System Center Virtual Machine Manger 2008 (SCVMM 2008), a Virtual Server 2005 or Hyper-V host may have a status of "Not Responding" or "Needs Attention."

When you view the jobs tab, the refresh host job has failed with the following error message:

Error (2927) A Hardware Management error has occurred trying to contact server servername.domainname.com.
(Unknown error (0x80338104))

Cause

This issue can be caused by a "Restricted Groups" group policy that is removing the VMM Server machine account from the local administrators group on the host computer.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, perform one of the following steps:

Method 1

Add the VMM Server machine account to the Administrators "restricted groups" group policy setting.

Note To add the VMM Server machine account to the restricted group setting, use the following syntax:

domainname\severname$

Method 2

Create a new organizational unit in the domain, move the Virtual Server 2005 and Hyper-V Server computer objects to the new OU and then configure the new organizational unit to block policy inheritance.
