SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • The Distributed File System (DFS) Replication service is installed on a server that is running Windows Server 2008.
  • You configure the server to replicate files from other servers. In this configuration, the server is a downstream server that has many upstream partners.
  • The DFS Replication service is under a heavy load.
In this scenario, the DFS Replication service of the downstream server stops responding but sends no error message or notification.

Note
  • When you run the DFSRDIAG BACKLOG command several times to check the replication backlog, the output list is not updated.
  • When you restart the DFS Replication service on the downstream server, replication resumes.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a deadlock in the DFS Replication service.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, install this hotfix on the Windows Server 2008-based downstream server.

Note This hotfix also resolves the problem that is mentioned in Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) article 979295. However, this hotfix only applies to the Windows Server 2008-based upstream servers that are mentioned in KB article 979295.
