Remote Desktop Services does not prevent a console session from being disconnected in Windows Server 2008 R2

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • On a server that is running Windows Server 2008 R2, Remote Desktop Services runs in Remote Administration mode.
  • An administrator creates an administrative session to the server by using Remote Desktop Connection.
  • The administrator is prompted by a dialog box to disconnect a session to run the newly created session.
In this scenario, the dialog box lists both the administrative sessions and the console sessions on the server. Then, Remote Desktop Services does not protect the console sessions from being disconnected. If the administrator disconnects the console session, applications that are running in the console session may not function correctly.

For example, consider the following specific scenario:
  • The UserA user account logs on to a console session on a Windows Server 2008 R2-based remote desktop server.
  • The UserB user account creates an administrative session to the same remote desktop server.
  • The UserC administrator user account creates a third administrative session.

    UserC is prompted to disconnect a session so that the third session can be created.
In this case, Remote Desktop Services does not protect the console sessions from being disconnected.

RESOLUTION

After you install the following hotfix, the console session is not listed in the dialog box when you are prompted to disconnect a session.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must be running Windows Server 2008 R2.

Let me fix it myself

To create the registry key yourself, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start

    , type regedit in the Search programs and files box, and then press ENTER.

    If you are prompted for an administrator password, type the password. If you are prompted for confirmation, provide confirmation.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HEKY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\Winstations
  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  4. Type DenyConsoleDisconnect, and then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click DenyConsoleDisconnect, and then click Modify.
  6. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  7. Exit Registry Editor.
