SYMPTOMS

In the Virtual Machine Manager Administrator Console of Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2007, you try to create a new template from a Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2)-based virtual machine. However, the job fails, and you receive the following error message:
Error (608)
Timeout occurred while waiting for Sysprep to finish processing on the virtual Machine.
...
Recommended Action
Ensure you are using the version of sysprep binaries that match with virtual machine's Windows version, and then try the operation again.
Note This problem occurs only when you create a template from a virtual machine that is running Windows Server 2003 SP2.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the versions of the Sysprep.exe file and of the Setupcl.exe file are incorrect. These two files are located in the following folder:
VMM_Install\Sysprep\5.2.3790.3959
Note VMM_Install is the folder in which System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2007 is installed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain update 942372 from the following Microsoft Update Web site:
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, replace the Sysprep.exe file and the Setupcl.exe file by using the correct x86-based files for Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Download the latest version of the System Preparation tool for Windows Server 2003 SP2 deployment. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
926028 Updated System Preparation tool for Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2
  2. Extract the Deploy.cab from the update package. To do this, open a command prompt, switch the working directory to the location in which you saved the WindowsServer2003-KB926028-v2-x86-ENU.exe package, and then type the following command:
    WindowsServer2003-KB926028-v2-x86-ENU.exe /x
  3. Open the Deploy.cab file that you extracted in step 2.
  4. From the Deploy.cab file, copy the Sysprep.exe file and the Setupcl.exe file to the following folder to replace the existing files:
    VMM_Install\Sysprep\5.2.3790.3959
Note VMM_Install is the folder in which System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2007 is installed.
Note If the virtual machine shows a "Failed" status, the status will not change to "Running" even if the guest operating system is running correctly. Additionally, the status will not change back to "Running" after you use the Repair option to repair the virtual machine. To make the virtual machine display the correct status, remove the host on which the virtual machine is running. Then, re-add the host to Virtual Machine Manager. The virtual machine is re-detected, and the status displays correctly.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
