Action

You are attempting to use an application that creates a scheduled task within Windows Vista and the scheduled task fails to be created correctly.

Result

The failure to create the scheduled task may or may not be reported by the application, in some instances the application may close without any prompts.

Cause

The application attempted to create a scheduled task which has a period and less than three alpha-numeric characters after the period.

For example if the title of the task were, "Run Full System Scan - john.doe", the task creation would fail.

Resolution

The following workarounds are available:
  1. Create the Scheduled Task manually without using a period in the task name.
    or
  2. Create the Scheduled Task and ensure there are more than 3 alpha-numeric characters after the period.

More Information

The Task Scheduler API's have changed between the release of Windows XP and Windows Vista, some applications may still be using the 1.0 interface which can result in unexpected side effects. For further information about the Task Scheduler 2.0 Interface please see: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa383600(VS.85).aspx
