We highly recommend that you install this update to resolve the problem described in this article and other DPM-related issues.

This article describes the Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) 2007 issues that are fixed in the Data Protection Manager 2007 hotfix rollup package that is dated August 28, 2009.

Issues addressed

This rollup addresses the following issues:

Issue 1

When you create or modify a protection group, file shares on Windows Server 2008 failover clusters are not listed.

Issue 2

When you restore a SharePoint site that is configured to use a host header, an incorrect SharePoint site is restored.

Issue 3

You cannot protect Exchange 2007 storage groups when the mailbox server names are subsets of one another in a cluster.

Issue 4

Tape backup jobs that span multiple tapes may fail with the following error:
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error (0x8007045D)

Issue 5

The DPM service may crash when you protect a mirror SQL database that is between an instance of SQLof the stand-alone kind and an instance of SQL of theclustered kind. Additionally, the following error is logged in the DPM Alerts event log:
The DPM service terminated unexpectedly during completion of the job. The termination may have been caused by a system reboot. (ID: 910)

Issue 6

You cannot protect data sources on a cluster that uses the GeoCluster disk resource type.

Issue 7

Data Protection Manager 2007 cannot protect the content databases if Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Service Pack 2 is configured to connect to a content database by using a SQL Server alias. Additionally, the following error is logged:
This Windows SharePoint Services farm cannot be protected because DPM did not find any dependent databases and search indices to be protected. (ID: 32008)

Issue 8

Consistency checks fail, and you receive the following error message:
An unexpected error occurred during job execution. (ID 104 Details: The system cannot find the file specified (0x80070002))
This occurs because the file or directory was deleted from the replica volume.

Issue 9

If multiple tape libraries are connected to the DPM server while a full inventory is performed on the libraries, the tape drives within the tape libraries may become offline.

Issue 10

The DPM Administrator console may crash when you modify the tape backup options in the modify protection group wizard.

Issue 11

Unprotected directories are not deleted from the replica volume when there are protected file shares on the volume

Issue 12

It may take more than 15 minutes to modify a protection group or the disk allocation.

Issue 13

DPM service crashes may not be captured by Watson reports or Event logs.

Issue 14

A single failure in a detailed tape inventory fails the "Corrective action" job.

Issue 15

If Library Sharing is enabled and a fast inventory is performed while a tape drive is offline, the DPM service may crash. Additionally, the following error is logged in the DPM Alerts event log:
The DPM service terminated unexpectedly during completion of the job. The termination may have been caused by a system reboot. (ID: 910)

Issue 16

When you view the Libraries tab in theManagementsection and the Library Sharingsetting is enabled, the DPM Administrator console may crash.

Issue 17

The DPM protection agent crashes and jobs fail. Then, you receive the following error message:
DPM failed to communicate with the protection agent on servername.domainname.com because the agent is not responding. (ID 43 Details: Internal error code: 0x8099090E)

Issue 18

The DPM service may crash after an unhandled SQL exception occurs. Additionally, the following error is logged in the DPM Alerts event log:
The DPM service terminated unexpectedly during completion of the job. The termination may have been caused by a system reboot. (ID: 910)

Issue 19

Detailed inventories can raise alerts for failure on each slot. If you have set many slots, too many alerts may be raised. Additionally, alertsare raised for each slot when you cancel the library detailed inventories. To prevent these alerts from being raised, set the registry as follows after you apply the update:
Subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\1.0\Alert
Name: DetailedInventoryFailed
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 0
Note After you apply the update and the registry setting, you can still
determine whether the DI jobs failed or succeeded in the jobs view.

Issue 20

The DPM service may crash if the MediaSequenceNumber attribute of the tape is not found. Additionally, the following error is logged in the DPM Alerts event log:
The DPM service terminated unexpectedly during completion of the job. The termination may have been caused by a system reboot. (ID: 910)

Issue 21

The DPMLA service may crash when the Library Sharing setting is enabled.

Issue 22

The DPM protection agent crashes and tape backup jobs fail. Then, you receive the following error message:
The protection agent on servername.domainname.com was temporarily unable to respond because it was in an unexpected state. (ID 60 Details: Internal error code: 0x809909B0)

Issue 23

If a Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 farm is configured by using a fully qualified domain name (FQDN), consistency checks or initial replication fails with error 0x80042308:VSS Object not found.
