FIX: The Database Mirroring session is disconnected when you manually perform a failover in SQL Server 2008

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 fix release.

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • In Microsoft SQL Server 2008, you set up Database Mirroring on a database that has a read-only filegroup.
  • You try to manually perform a failover.
In this scenario, the Database Mirroring session may be disconnected. Additionally, in the error log file of the new mirror server (the old principal server), the following errors may be logged for each file in the read-only filegroup:
<Date><Time> spid40s Error: 823, Severity: 24, State: 3.

<Date><Time> spid40s The operating system returned error 5(Access is denied.) to SQL Server during a write at offset 0000000000000000 in file '<File Name>'. Additional messages in the SQL Server error log and system event log may provide more detail. This is a severe system-level error condition that threatens database integrity and must be corrected immediately. Complete a full database consistency check (DBCC CHECKDB). This error can be caused by many factors; for more information, see SQL Server Books Online.


Note This issue does not occur when SQL Server performs an automatic failover.

RESOLUTION

Note Because the builds are cumulative, each new fix release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 fix release. Microsoft recommends that you consider applying the most recent fix release that contains this hotfix. The SQL Server 2008 builds that were released after SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 was released
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 hotfixes are created for specific SQL Server service packs. You must apply a SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 hotfix to an installation of SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1. By default, any hotfix that is provided in a SQL Server service pack is included in the next SQL Server service pack.
