SUMMARY

In order to successfully migrate to Windows Small Business Server 2011, you must install and run the Migration Prepartion tool on the server you are migrating. The preparation tool will execute a Best Practice Analyzer scan to check the source server for problems that may cause the migration to fail. This article describes the rules that the Best Practice Analyzer uses to perform the scan.

The following rules will always run.

Rule: DNS Client Service not started
Severity: Warning
Description: The DNS Client service is not running on this server. By default, this service is running and Startup Type is set to Automatic.

Rule: DNS Server Service not started
Severity: Warning
Description: The DNS Server service is not running on this server. By default, this service is running and Startup Type is set to Automatic.

Rule: Domain functional level
Severity: Error
Description: The source domain functional level is: Windows Server 2000 domain level. To finish the migration successfully, you must raise the level of the domain and forest to Windows Server 2003. Rule: Domain functional level
Severity: Error
Description: The source domain functional level is: Windows Server 2003 interim domain level. To finish the migration successfully, you must raise the level of the domain and forest to Windows Server 2003. For more information about how to raise the domain functional level, go to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=184728.

Rule: MSDTC Service not started
Severity: Warning
Description: The MSDTC service is not running on this server. By default, this service is running and Startup Type is set to Automatic.

Rule: Forest functional level
Severity: Error
Description: The source forest functional level is: Windows 2000 forest level. To finish the migration successfully, you must raise the level of the domain and forest to Windows Server 2003. Rule: Forest functional level
Severity: Error
Description: The source forest functional level is: Windows Server 2003 interim forest level. To finish the migration successfully, you must raise the level of the domain and forest to Windows Server 2003. Rule: The server is in a journal wrap condition
Severity: Error
Description: The server is in a journal wrap condition. For more information, see the Knowledge Base article "Troubleshooting journal_wrap errors on Sysvol and DFS replica sets" at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=143372. You should clear System Event logs after troubleshooting this issue.

Rule: Server Service not started
Severity: Error
Description: The Server service is not running on this server. By default, this service is running and Startup Type is set to Automatic.

Rule: Workstation Service not started
Severity: Error
Description: The Workstation service is not running on this server. By default, this service is running and Startup Type is set to Automatic.

Rule: Netlogon Service not started
Severity: Warning
Description: The Netlogon service is not running on this server. By default, this service is running and Startup Type is set to Automatic.

Rule: Remote Registry Service not started
Severity: Error
Description: The Remote Registry service is not running on this server. By default, this service is running and Startup Type is set to Automatic.

Rule: The source server must be on a Class C Subnet and with only one network adapter enabled.
Severity: Warning
Description: Windows Small Business Server  only supports a Class C Subnet. Either the source server does not have a network adapter in a Class C Subnet, or the source server has more than one network adapter enabled. Rule: The Sysvol folder is not shared
Severity: Error
Description:The Sysvol folder is not shared. This indicates that there is a problem with the domain. For more information, see "Check the Status of the SYSVOL and Netlogon Shares" at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=143371.

Rule: SysvolReady not 1
Severity: Error
Description: The SysvolReady registry key is not equal to 1. This indicates that there is a problem with the domain. For more information, see "Check the Status of the SYSVOL and Netlogon Shares" at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=143371.

The following rules will also run if the source server is Windows Small Business Server 2003.

Rule: Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 SP 2 not installed
Severity: Warning
Description: Microsoft recommends that you install Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Exchange Server 2003. You can download SP2 for Exchange Server 2003 from the Microsoft Web site at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=98933.

Rule: Change the functional level of Exchange Server 2003
Severity: Error
Description: The functional level of your Exchange Server 2003 organization is: Mixed Mode (can support pre-Exchange 2000 servers).   This must be changed to native mode before attempting to migrate to Windows Small Business Server 2010. Go to Start/All Programs/Microsoft Exchange/System Manager then right click on the organization and select Properties.

Rule: KB943494 is not installed
Severity: Error
Description: To extend the allowable grace period for supported scenarios from 7 days to 21 days, you must install KB943494. The installation file for this update is located in the Tools folder of Windows SBS 7 DVD1.

Rule: Microsoft Active Directory Connector is installed
Severity: Warning
Description: The Microsoft Active Directory Connector component is installed. You must remove this component before migrating to Windows Small Business Server 2010. To remove the Active Directory Connector component, open the Add or Remove Programs control panel, select Microsoft Active Directory Connector, and then click Change/Remove.

Rule: The primary group for the administrator is not Domain Users
Severity: Error
Description: The primary group for the administrator is not Domain Users. To change this, open Active Directory Users and Computers, double-click the Administrator account, and then click the Member Of tab. In the list of groups, select Domain Users, and then click Set Primary Group.

Rule: Managed recipient policies
Severity: Error
Description: The Mailbox Manager setting is enabled for one or more recipient policies. As a result, the recipient policies will not be upgraded if you migrate to Windows SBS 7 and Exchange Server 2010.

Rule: Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 SP3 or later is not installed
Severity: Warning
Description: You are recommended to install SP3 for Windows SharePoint Services 2.0. You can download it from the Microsoft Web site (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=101615).

Rule: Windows SBS 2003 Service Pack 1 not installed
Severity: Warning
Description: Before starting the migration, you must install Windows SBS 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on source server. Please note that Windows SBS 2003 SP1 is not the same as Windows Server 2003 SP1. For more information, see "Downloading and Installing Windows Small Business Server 2003 Service Pack 1" at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=50694.

Rule: A smart host is configured on the SMTP virtual server
Severity: Warning
Description: To remove the smart host on the SMTP virtual server, open the properties for the Default SMTP Virtual Server on your Exchange 2003 server, select the Delivery tab, and then click the Advanced button. If a smart host is configured, remove it, and then click OK.

Rule: The Outbound SMTP port is not set to port 25
Severity: Warning
Description: To complete the migration successfully, you must set the TCP port for outbound connections to port 25.  To change the TCP port for outbound connections, open the properties for the Default SMTP Virtual Server on your Exchange 2003 server, select the Delivery tab, click Outbound connections, and then verify that the TCP port is set to 25.

The following rules will also run if the source server is Windows Small Business Server 2003 or Windows Server 2003.

Rule: Active Directory Schema not extended for migration
Severity: Error
Description: To successfully complete the migration process, you must update the Active Directory Domain Services schema on the source server. If the server is running either Windows SBS 2003 or Windows Server 2003, you must prepare both the domain schema and the forest schema. Rule: A Postmaster account exists
Severity: Warning
Description: An account (sAMAccountName) exists with the name of Postmaster. This can prevent you from migrating your server to a new operating system. To avoid this issue, rename the Postmaster account before you begin a migration.


The following rules will also run if the source server is Windows Small Business Server 2008.

Rule: The IPv6  protocol is not enabled
Severity: Warning
Description: Open the Properties page for the network adapter, and then select TCP/IPv6. Windows Small Business Server is designed to function with IPv6 enabled. If you need to disable IPv6, you should run Fix It Wizard 50045 at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=159700 to ensure that the server functions correctly.

Rule: Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 SP3 not installed
Severity: Error
Description: Service Pack 3 (SP3) for Exchange Server 2007 is required. You can follow the instructions to download and install SP3 for Exchange Server 2007 from Microsoft Web site at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=198195.

Rule: Service Pack 2 for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 is not installed
Severity: Warning
Description: Microsoft recommends that you install Service Pack 2 for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. You can download the service pack from the Microsoft Web site at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=195829.

Rule: A smart host is configured for e-mail
Severity: Warnng
Description: A smart host is configured on you Windows SBS 2008 server. For instructions on how to remove the smart host, see the Microsoft Web site at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=195817.
