INTRODUCTION

This article describes the Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) 2008 R2 issues that are resolved in the hotfix rollup package that was released on June 8, 2010.

List of issues that are fixed

Issue 1

You may experience one of the following symptoms:
  • SCVMM Admin Console does not list the GUID partition table (GPT) disks as available storage.
  • When you attach a GPT disk to a highly available virtual machine by using Hyper-V Manager or Failover Cluster Management Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in, the SCVMM Admin Console lists the status of the virtual machine as Unsupported Cluster Configuration.

Issue 2

When you manage VMware Virtual Center that has distributed switches, the Virtual Machine Manager service (Vmmservice.exe) crashes.

Additionally, the following events are logged in the VM Manager log:

Description: System.InvalidCastException: Unable to cast object of type 'Microsoft.VirtualManager.VMWareService.VirtualDeviceBackingInfo' to type 'Microsoft.VirtualManager.VMWareService.VirtualDeviceDeviceBackingInfo'.

Issue 3

Consider the following scenario:
  • Quick Storage Migration (QSM) is used to migrate virtual machines (VMs) between cluster shared volumes (CSV).
  • After Quick Storage Migration is completed, the Failover Cluster Management MMC snap-in reports that the VM still uses the old CSV volume.

Issue 4

If a VM is configured with 3 virtual processors, the SCVMM Admin Console crashes. 

Note To resolve this issue, install this hotfix rollup package and the SCVMM Admin Console rollup 982523.

Issue 5

The settings for the virtual network are incorrect after a Refresh-VMHost cmdlet job is completed.

How to obtain this SCVMM 2008 R2 hotfix rollup package

This hotfix rollup package is available on Microsoft Update.

To obtain this update from Microsoft Update, follow these steps on the Virtual Machine Manager server:
  1. Click Start, and then select Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Windows Update.
  3. In the Windows Update window, click Check Online for updates from Microsoft Update.
  4. Click important updates are available.
  5. Select Update for System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 (KB982522), and then click OK.
  6. Click Install updates.
Note If the Virtual Machine Manager or Virtual Machine Manager Agent service is running when the hotfix rollup package is installed on the Virtual Machine Manager server, you have to restart the computer.

How to update the VMM agent on the Hyper-V and Virtual Server hosts

Note If the previous hotfix rollup package 978560 is not installed before this hotfix rollup package is installed, the VMM agents that are installed on the Hyper-V and Virtual Server hosts have to be updated. If the agent has not been updated, the hosts have a status of Needs Attention.

To update the VMM agent on multiple hosts, follow these steps:
  1. Open SCVMM Admin Console.
  2. Click Administration, and then click Managed Computers.
  3. Select the hosts, and then click Update Agent.
  4. Enter your user account credentials, and then click OK.

Note The Microsoft Update Catalog has different versions of the hotfix rollup package. These different versions have the EVAL, OEM, RETAIL, and WORKGRP labels. Download the appropriate version for your installation.

To install this hotfix rollup package that can be downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog on the Virtual Machine Manager server, follow these steps:
  1. Extract the VmmServer64Update-RETAIL.cab file to a temporary directory.
  2. Open an elevated command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER to install the update:
    msiexec /update vmmServer64Update-RETAIL.msp BOOTSTRAPPED=1

    Note The name of the package varies, depending on the version that was downloaded.
  3. After the hotfix rollup package is installed on the Virtual Machine Manager server, update the VMM agent on the Hyper-V and Virtual Server hosts.
Note Step #3 is only required if the previous hotfix rollup package 978560 is not installed before this hotfix rollup package is installed.

Restart requirement
If the Virtual Machine Manager or Virtual Machine Manager Agent service is running when the hotfix rollup package is installed on the Virtual Machine Manager server, you have to restart the computer.
Update replacement information
This hotfix rollup package replaces the hotfix rollup package 978560.
