SYMPTOMS

You cannot put a Microsoft Windows Embedded for Point of Service-based computer into hibernation as expected.

Additionally, when a SCSI or SATA storage device is installed, a dump file is not created when you receive a Stop error message or a fatal system error message.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if the Diskdump.sys file is missing.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Download the WePOS-KB903896.exe executable package. To obtain this software update, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=F5D17D5B-103C-43DD-9347-834BA9954D0F
  2. Use one of the following methods to replace the Diskdump.sys file:
    • Copy the WePOS-KB903896.exe file to the destination computer, and then double-click the file to extract the software update.
    • Unzip the executable package, and then copy the Diskdump.sys file to the %Windows%\System32\Drivers folder that is on the Windows Embedded for Point of Service-based computer.
Note You do not need a license to redistribute this file.

MORE INFORMATION

The Diskdump.sys file is not associated with any hardware or .inf file. The Diskdump.sys file provides kernel-mode disk services. The system uses these services to record the physical memory to a SCSI or SATA storage device when a Stop error or a fatal system error occurs.

The Diskdump.sys file is not installed when Plug and Play devices are enumerated. If the Diskdump.sys file exists on a computer where a SCSI or SATA storage device is installed, the Diskdump.sys file writes the contents of the physical memory to the system storage device when you receive a Stop error message or a fatal system error message.
