Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 fix release.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have Microsoft SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2 Database Engine installed on a computer.

  • You create an instance of SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2.

  • You slipstream Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Service Package 1 (SP1), Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Service Package 2 (SP2) or Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Package 1 (SP1) into the original SQL-installation media.

  • You use the slipstreamed installation media to add new features to the SQL instance.

In this scenario, the slipstream installation might fail.

Cause

This issue occurs because of a defect in the SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2 Database Engine Setup component. The Setup component does not support slipstream installations that add new features. When a slipstream installation runs, a Watson Bucket 482639000 issue occurs, and the setup process fails during the SetupActionName: sqlengineconfigaction_patch_validation stage.
