Symptoms

Assume that you are using a Windows Server 2012 R2 data protection manager (DPM) server. When the server has storage outage, you cannot run DPM jobs. A volume shadow copy (VSS) software provider error occurs that indicates access is denied. Additionally, you receive the following error message:

The VSS application writer or the VSS provider is in a bad state. Either it was already in a bad state or it entered a bad state during the current operation. (ID 30111 Details: VssError: The shadow copy provider had an error. Check the System and Application event logs for more information (0x80042306)).

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install update rollup 2928680.
