Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have Microsoft SQL Server 2014 installed on a computer.

  • You create incremental statistics on your table.

  • You merge partitions of your table multiple times to reduce the number of the partitions by at least 2.

  • You update the incremental statistics manually or update enough data to trigger the automatic statistics update by compiling a query.

In this scenario, an access violation occurs. Additionally, you receive the following error:

A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded.
