Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a failover cluster that is running in Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2012.

  • You add a GPT-format physical disk together with multiple partitions on the cluster.

  • You install a Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) hardware provider, and then you take a VSS snapshot of the disk.

  • You enable maintenance mode, and then you put the volume into maintenance mode.

In this scenario, the volume fails with an "access denied" error message, and you cannot lock the volume.
