Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You open a workbook that contains Microsoft PowerPivot data.
  • You try to add a Slicer to a PivotTable by using the PowerPivot field list.

In this scenario, you may receive the following error message:

============================
Error Message:
============================
The parameter is incorrect. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070057 (E_INVALIDARG))
----------------------------
Slicer Field could not be added. Reason: The parameter is incorrect. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070057 (E_INVALIDARG))

Cause

The PivotTable is not in sync with the PowerPivot data. To verify this, try to add a Slicer by using Microsoft Excel’s native support for adding Slicers, instead of by using PowerPivot functionality. In this case, you receive the following error message:

This PivotTable report is invalid. Try refreshing the data (On the Options tab, click Refresh).

Resolution

Refresh the table data by using the Refresh option under Options. Or, click Refresh from the shortcut menu on the PivotTable. Then, try again to add the Slicer.
