Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You install Utilities and SDK for Subsystem for UNIX-based Applications (SUA) on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista.

  • You run a multithreaded application that uses portable operating system interface (POSIX) threads on the computer.

In this scenario, the PSXSS.EXE process may stop unexpectedly, and the following event is logged into the Application log: Log Name: Application
Source: Application Error
Date: <date>
Event ID: 1000
Task Category: (100)
Level: Error
Keywords: Classic
User: N/A
Computer: <computer>
Description:
Faulting application psxss.exe, version <version>, time stamp <timestamp>, faulting module ntdll.dll, version <version>, time stamp <timestamp>, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset <offset>, process id <process id>, application start time <time>.

Cause

This problem occurs because the pointer to the session structure of the process is not set to NULL after the structure is released. When another thread tries to access the structure, a heap corruption occurs.
