Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:
You install Windows Installer 4.5 on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.
Note Windows Installer 4.5 is included with Windows Vista Service Pack 2 and with Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2.
You run a WMI query for the Win32_Product WMI class in an application or a service. For example, you use the Windows Management Instrumentation Tester tool (Wbemtest.exe) to query the Win32_Product WMI class.
In this scenario, you encounter the following issues:
- Temporary files may be left behind in the C:\Windows\Installer folder. These temporary files cause the size of the folder to grow. This may in turn cause drive C to run out of disk space.
- The following event is logged in the Application log one or more times:
- You may notice CPU usage for the Wmiprvse.exe process which hosts the Windows Installer provider (Msiprov.dll).
Cause
When you query the Win32_Product WMI class, Windows Installer reconfigures products on your computer if these products were installed by using Windows Installer. This reconfiguration causes CPU usage. Additionally, an event is logged for each product that is reconfigured.
After Windows Installer reconfigures a product, temporary files are left behind if the product meets the following conditions:
- The original .msi file does not exist in the C:\Windows\Installer folder.
- The installation path is a URL that begins with "http:."
The temporary files cause the size of the C:\Windows\Installer folder to increase.
Note The reconfiguration does not affect the products that are reconfigured.
Resolution
Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

To apply this hotfix, you must be running one of the following operating systems:
- Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2)
- Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2)
- Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2)

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 file information notes
Important Windows Vista hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows Vista" is listed on the Hotfix Request page.
