SYMPTOMS

When a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 is in a Server Message Block Version 2 (SMB2) environment, the computer may crash. Additionally, you receive one of the following Stop error messages:

STOP 0x000000D1 (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4) DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Stop 0x0000007E (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4) SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

Notes
  • The parameters in the error messages vary, depending on the configuration of the computer.
  • Not all "0x000000D1" or "0x0000007E" Stop errors are caused by this issue.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must be running one of the following operating systems:
  • Windows 7
  • Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

Registry information

To use the hotfix in this package, you do not have to make any changes to the registry.

You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

File information
