How to troubleshoot Internet Explorer 9 installation problems

Introduction

Internet Explorer 9 runs only on Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008. When you try to install Internet Explorer 9, you may receive an error message (for example, 0x800F081E) and may be unable to finish installing Internet Explorer 9.

Some prerequisites are required for installing Internet Explorer 9. To install Internet Explorer 9, the computer must be running one of the following operating systems:
  • Windows Vista 32-bit with Service Pack 2 (SP2) or a later version
  • Windows Vista 64-bit with Service Pack 2 (SP2) or a later version
  • Windows 7 32-bit or a later version
  • Windows 7 64-bit or a later version
  • Windows Server 2008 32-bit with Service Pack 2 (SP2) or a later version
  • Windows Server 2008 64-bit with Service Pack 2 (SP2) or a later version
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit or a later version

To install Internet Explorer 9 on a computer that is running one of these operating systems, follow these steps:
  1. Make sure that your computer has the latest software and updates. To do this, follow these steps: 
    1. Run Windows Update, and then click Check for updates.
    2. Check whether Internet Explorer 9 is included in the list of files to update. If Internet Explorer 9 is included, exclude it before you update. (You can see which updates are available by clicking the <NumberOfUpdates> important updates are available link in the Windows Update window.)
    3. If an error is encountered during the Windows Update process, please see Fix the problem with Microsoft Windows Update that is not working.
  2. Restart your computer to make sure that any new updates take effect.
  3. Try to install Internet Explorer 9. To do this, use one of the following methods:
    • Use Windows Update if you excluded Internet Explorer 9 in step 1.
    • Download the installer from the Download Internet Explorer 9 website.

  4. If you still cannot install Internet Explorer 9, you should manually install the prerequisite files. To do this, by follow the instructions in Prerequisites for installing Internet Explorer 9, and then repeat step 3.
  5. If you still have issues, please contact Microsoft Support.
