SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You connect a storage device to a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You configure Microsoft Multipath I/O (MPIO) and Microsoft Device Specific Module (MSDSM) as multiple paths that are configured to the storage array.
  • A path to the storage device fails and the path failover process starts.
In this scenario, the path failover process fails, and any application that tries to access the storage device may stop responding. Therefore, the MPIO path does not fail over.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because MPIO does not obtain the alternative path.

When MPIO tries to fail over to another path while another operation tries to remove the Logical Unit Number (LUN) for the failed path, either operation may occur first. However, MPIO does not obtain the alternative path if the LUN for the failed path is removed before MPIO accesses the device. Therefore, the failover operation fails.

RESOLUTION

Windows Server 2008 R2 file information notes
Important Windows 7 hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, hotfixes on the Hotfix Request page are listed under both operating systems. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.
  • The files that apply to a specific product, milestone (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table:
