Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:
You have a computer that is running one of the following operating systems:
- Windows Vista
- Windows Server 2008
- Windows 7
- Windows Server 2008 R2
You share some files or some folders on the computer.
Some users try to access the shared files or the shared folders from remote computers.
In this scenario, the computer that shares the files and the folders may temporarily not respond to file share requests. When this issue occurs, users cannot enumerate the shared files or the shared folders on the computer.
Note The computer that shares the files and the folders resumes responding to requests for shared resources after 4 minutes.
Cause
This issue occurs because the Server Message Block (SMB) worker thread that handles SMB requests is not available. This causes the computer not to respond to SMB requests. Therefore, you experience the issue that is described in the "Symptoms" section.
Resolution
Note You need to apply the hotfix package on the computer which shares files.
Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem that is described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.
