SYMPTOMS

When you start Windows Live Mail after you install Windows Update KB2454826, Windows Live Mail may not start successfully.

CAUSE

This issue can be caused if all the following scenarios apply on your Windows computer:
  • You have Intel integrated graphics driver Igdkmd32.sys (32-bit) / Igdkmd64.sys (64-bit) versions 8.15.10.2104 through 8.15.10.2141
  • You have Windows Update KB2454826 installed on your computer
  • You are using Windows Live Mail versions 15.4 and later
Windows Live Mail stops responding or does not start if you have Intel integrated graphics driver Igdkmd32.sys (32-bit) / Igdkmd64.sys (64-bit) versions 8.15.10.2104 through 8.15.10.2141. These drivers have been found to cause compatibility with certain applications that use D2D (Direct2D). For example, if you use these drivers, Windows Live Mail could stop responding after you install update KB2454826.  

To check for the Intel integrated graphics driver and driver version, follow these steps:
  1. Open DirectX Diagnostic Tool by clicking the Start button, typing dxdiag in the Search box, and then pressing ENTER
  2. Click the Display tab
  3. Note the driver and driver version to compare with the versions listed below
If you have the Intel integrated graphics driver and driver version 8.15.10.2104 through 8.15.10.214 visit the website for the manufacture of your computer to see if a newer driver is available.

To resolve this issue you will need to add a set of registry keys to your Windows computer. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Make sure Windows Live Mail is closed
  2. Click Start, and then in the Search box, type Notepad
  3. In the Programs list, click Notepad

  5. In Notepad, click on File, and click Save As
  6. Select the Desktop as the location to save the file
  7. In the File name box, type fixkey.reg, then click All Files (*.*) in the Save as type list, and then click Save
  8. On the desktop, double-click the fixkey.reg file to add the registry values to the Windows registry. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or click Continue
  9. Click Yes, and then click OK
  10. tart Windows Live Mail again 

Method 2: Update your drivers
Check Windows Update for the latest driver for your hardware or visit your computer manufacturer’s website to see whether a newer Intel integrated graphics driver is available. To check Windows Update for updates follow the steps below:
  1. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button . In the search box, type Update, and then, in the list of results, click Windows Update.
  2. In the navigation pane, click Check for updates, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer.
  3. If you see a message that states that you that important updates are available, or telling you to review important updates, click the message to view and select the important updates to install.
  4. In the list, click the important updates for more information. Select the check boxes for any updates that you want to install, and then click OK.
  5. Click Install updates.
