Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You use Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 or Microsoft Outlook 2010 to receive email messages in Windows Vista, in Windows Server 2008, in Windows 7, or in Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You receive a compressed S/MIME email message that is created by a third-party Outlook add-in.
  • The third-party Outlook add-in is not installed on your computer.
  • You try to open the email message.

In this scenario, Outlook crashes.

Cause

This issue occurs because of a double free operation in the Crypt32.dll module.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
