"0x0000007F" Stop error when you try to wake the computer from Sleep (S3) mode if you use offline files in Windows Vista, in Windows Server 2008, in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

Applies To
Windows Vista Business Windows Vista Enterprise Windows Vista Ultimate Windows Server 2008 Datacenter Windows Server 2008 Datacenter without Hyper-V Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Windows Server 2008 Enterprise without Hyper-V Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-Based Systems Windows Server 2008 Foundation Windows Server 2008 Standard Windows Server 2008 Standard without Hyper-V Windows Server 2008 Web Edition Windows 7 Enterprise Windows 7 Professional Windows 7 Ultimate Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard

Symptoms

Assume that you use offline files (client-side caching) on a computer that is running one of the following operating systems:

  • Windows Vista
  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows 7
  • Windows Server 2008 R2

In this situation, the computer may crash when you try to wake the computer from Sleep (S3) mode. Additionally, you receive a Stop error message that resembles the following:

Note

STOP: 0x0000007F (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4)
UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP

Notes

  • Not all "0x0000007F" Stop errors are caused by this issue.
  • Parameters in this Stop error message may vary, depending on the configuration of the computer.
  • This issue occurs if no network connection is available when you wake the computer.
  • This issue may be more likely to occur if the computer has remembered connections to Distributed File System (DFS) shares that contain offline files.

Cause

This issue occurs because of a kernel stack overflow that is caused when the client-side caching driver begins a flush operation of an internal cache during the processing of an I/O request packet.

Resolution

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 file information notes

Important Windows Vista hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows Vista" is listed on the Hotfix Request page. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows Vista" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.
