A transient communication failure causes a Windows Server 2008 R2 failover cluster to stop working

Consider the following scenario:

• You configure a failover cluster on some computers that are running Windows Server 2008 R2.
• A transient communication failure occurs in the cluster.

In this scenario, the whole cluster stops working. You must restart all cluster nodes to recover from this issue.

This issue occurs because of a race condition in the reconnection logic of the Cluster service. When this race condition occurs, it leads to a deadlock situation in the Cluster database.

Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing.
