Time-out error occurs when you install a Windows Update package that contains drivers on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You try to install a Windows Update package that is marked as Important on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • The package contains a driver. For example, the package contains the USBport.sys driver.
  • The computer is configured to install updates automatically or during the shutdown process.
In this scenario, the installation process stops at zero percent for five minutes and then fails with a time-out error.

Note This issue is more likely to occur on a slower computer or on a computer that has many devices attached.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because of a race condition in the Plug and Play service during the driver update process.

RESOLUTION

Update information

Note If you have installed security update 2532531 from the Microsoft Download Center but have not installed this update (2552343), you will be offered security update 2532531 again through Windows Update. To work around this issue, install update 2552343 from the Microsoft Download Center, or when it is offered by Windows Update.
