Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You enable the Automatically manage paging file size for all drives option on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.

  • The system drive size is not larger than 4 times the amount of installed random access memory (RAM).

  • You configure the operating system to generate a complete memory dump file or a kernel memory dump file when a Stop error is encountered.

  • A Stop error is encountered.

In this scenario, the memory dump file is not generated.

Note If you add the IgnorePagefileSize registry entry in order to generate the memory dump file when a Stop error is encountered, the memory dump file is generated. However, the memory dump file might be truncated because of the paging file size.

Cause

This issue occurs because the operating system incorrectly sets the maximum paging file size to a quarter of the system drive size.

When this incorrect setting is set, the paging file managed by the operating system has insufficient free space to generate a complete memory dump file or a kernel memory dump file.

Resolution
