Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install the Web Server (IIS) role on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You install the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) IIS Server Extension feature on the computer.
  • You create a physical folder for a website, and then you add a virtual directory as a subfolder of the physical folder.
  • You select the virtual directory and then you double-click BITS Uploads in IIS Manager.
In this scenario, you receive an error message that resembles the following:
BITS server was unable to read from the IIS Meta-base as it is corrupt. The settings for this virtual directory have been reset to the BITS defaults.

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Additionally, IIS Manager crashes.

When this issue occurs, an Error event that resembles the following is logged in the Application log:
Log Name: Application
Source: Microsoft-Windows-IIS-IISManager
Date: <Date Time>
Event ID: 13
Task Category: None
Level: Error
Keywords: Classic
User: N/A
Computer: <Computer Name>
Description:
IISMANAGER_CRASH

IIS Manager terminated unexpectedly.

Cause

This issue occurs because BITS uses an Internet Server API (ISAPI) extension to enable IIS to upload files from BITS clients. BITS Uploads can be enabled only on virtual directories, and this extension adds some properties to the IIS metabase for the virtual directory component. BITS uses these properties to determine how to upload the files. If the parent directory of a virtual directory is a physical folder, IIS Manager crashes because the physical folder does not contain these properties.

Resolution

After you install the following hotfix package, IIS Manager determines whether the parent directory of a virtual directory is a physical folder before it tries to access the properties of the directory.

Windows Server 2008 R2 file information notes
Important Windows 7 hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, hotfixes on the Hotfix Request page are listed under both operating systems. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2" on the page.
