Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a Remote Desktop (RD) Session Host server that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

  • You enable client printer redirection on the RD Session Host server.

  • You have multiple client computers that have printers installed.

  • Multiple users establish Remote Desktop Services sessions to the RD Session Host server from the client computers.

  • The printers on the client computers are available in the Remote Desktop Services sessions.

In this scenario, invalid redirected printers may be displayed by applications that display the printers to the users.Note This issue does not occur if you use the Remote Desktop Easy Print feature. To enable this feature, use the Use Remote Desktop Easy Print printer driver first Group Policy.

Cause

This issue occurs because the Print Spooler adds a registry entry for each redirected printer under the following registry subkey for the user, and for all users logged on to the RD Session Host server:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\DevicesThe registry entries for redirected printers are deleted when the users disconnect or log off. However, other users may have logged off in the meantime. Therefore, the registry entries are leaked in their HKEY_CURRENT_USER registry hive. Over time, the registry subkey will accumulate many invalid registry entries for redirected printers that have permutations of the client name, the printer name, and the session ID. Applications that read this registry subkey will display invalid printers to the users. This behavior occurs if you do not use the Remote Desktop Easy Print feature.
