Symptoms

Assume that you use a performance monitoring tool that uses Performance Data Helper (PDH) functions to query performance data on a computer that is running one of the following operating systems:

  • Windows Vista

  • Windows Server 2008

  • Windows 7

  • Windows Server 2008 R2

For example, you use the System Monitor tool. In this situation, the memory usage of the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) Performance Adapter service (Wmiapsrv.exe) increases continuously. Therefore, the performance of the computer decreases.

Note This issue typically occurs when you use the performance monitoring tool to query performance counters that are related to iSCSI targets.

Cause

This issue occurs because an object is not cleaned up after the client application queries the performance data. Therefore, a memory leak occurs.

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 file information notes

Important Windows Vista hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows Vista" is listed on the Hotfix Request page.
