Issues

If you connect to Windows Update site on Windows XP, and select [Express Setup] or [Custom Setup], 0x8024400A error occurs.

Cause

Such issue can occur when Windows XP Service Pack 3 or the latest version of Windows Update Agent is not installed.

Try the steps from one of the methods shown below.

To see the version of the Service Pack installed, proceed as follows.

1. Click [Begin]

2. First, check the System Properties screen. For Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2, use the "method 1", and for Service Pack 3, use the "method 2".

Method 1: If you have not installed Windows XP Service Pack 3,

In this method, you may solve the problem by installing Windows XP Service Pack 3.
  1. Follow this link and click [Download].

  2. On Download Files - Security Warning screen, click [Save].

  3. On Save As screen, set the save location to [Desktop] and click [Save].

  4. When the download is complete, install by double clicking [WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU].

  5. Once the installation is complete, restart the computer and run Windows Update to see if the problem persists.

If the file size is not found to be 315 MB after downloading it, follow the next link to download and install the file.

If this does not work and the file size is still not 315 MB, download the Windows XP Service Pack 3 setup file from another computer and move it to your computer by using a removable storage device such as USB to install.




method 2: If you have not installed the latest version of Windows Update Agent,

In this method, you may solve the problem by installing Windows Update Agent.
  1. Follow this link and click [Save].


  2. On Download Files - Security Warning screen, click [Save].

  3. On Save as screen, set the Save Location to Local Disk (C:) and click [Save].

  4. Click [Begin] and [Run] in order.

  5. From the Run screen, type C:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce and click [Next].

    When typing C:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce , put a blank before /wuforce.

  6. When Open File - Security Warning screen appears, click [run] to complete the installation.
