Symptoms

On a computer that is running Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012, invalid memory access randomly occurs and causes the computer to crash. When this problem occurs, you receive a Stop error message that resembles the following:

STOP 0x00000050 (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4)
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

Notes

  • This Stop error describes a PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA issue.

  • The parameters in this error message vary, depending on the configuration of the computer.

  • Not all "Stop 0x00000050" errors are caused by this problem. This issue occurs when the Server service handles some server message block (SMB) requests from some remote computers.

This problem occurs on any drivers that implement the new features and improvements of the Windows 8 storage (StorPort) driver.

Cause

This issue occurs because the StorPort driver does not limit the uncached allocation to a 4-gigabyte (GB) region.

Resolution

This hotfix is also available at Microsoft Update Catalog.

Additionally, the dates and the times may change when you perform certain operations on the files.

Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 file information notesImportant Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows 8" is listed on the Hotfix Request page.
