Applies ToWindows 8.1 Windows 8.1 Enterprise Windows 8.1 Pro Windows 8.1 RTM Windows RT 8.1

Symptoms

Assume that a Windows 8.1-based computer has the fast startup feature enabled. When you right-click the Start hint and then select the Shut down option to shut down the computer, the shutdown time is longer than when you shut down the computer by using the new Windows UI. Additionally, the system will take much longer to start the next time that you start the computer.

Cause

When you select the Shut down option from the right-click context menu on the Start hint, the system will do a complete shutdown even though the fast startup feature is enabled. However, when you shut down the computer by using the new Windows UI, the system will enter a hybrid sleep state.
