Symptoms

After you start a Windows Server 2003-based computer, the computer may stop responding (hang). In this situation, many services cannot start. Additionally, you experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • When you use a domain user account to log on to the computer, the logon process becomes unresponsive. Additionally, a gray screen appears after you enter your user name and password in the Windows logon dialog box.

  • A gray screen appears after the Windows logon screen saver closes.

  • Clients cannot connect to the computer by using Remote Desktop Connection.

These symptoms may disappear after you restart the computer.

When these symptoms occur, you can still perform the following operations:

  • When you use a local user account to log on to the computer, the logon process is successful.

  • When you ping this computer from another computer, you receive replies.

  • You can successfully access any file share on this computer.

Cause

This problem may occur because the Rpcrt4.dll module incorrectly manages mutex resources. Therefore, a deadlock condition may occur in some threads of the Lsass.exe process.
