Error message when you try to visit the Windows Update Web site: "0x8ddd0007 You need to restart your computer to finish installing a program or updates"

When you try to visit the Windows Update Web site, you receive the following error message:

This problem occurs because of an incorrect value in a registry entry.

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods.

Resolution 1

Restart the computer. Then, try again to visit the Windows Update Web site.

Resolution 2

Delete the RebootRequired registry entry. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Locate the following registry subkey:
   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\AutoUpdate
3. Right-click the RebootRequired registry entry, click Delete, and then click OK to confirm.
4. Restart the computer, and then try again to visit the Windows Update Web site.
