SYMPTOMS

When you try to install updates from the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site, you may receive the following error:

CAUSE

This issue occurs if a Windows Update or Microsoft Update client file is in use when you try to install the updates.

To resolve this issue, stop and then restart the Windows Update service. Then, restart your computer. To do this, use one of the following methods, depending on the Microsoft Windows operating system that you are running.

Method for Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003

Close any Windows Update or Microsoft Update browser windows.
Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
At the command prompt, type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.
net stop wuauserv
net start wuauserv
Close the Command Prompt window.
Restart the computer.

Note After you restart your computer, give the computer sufficient time to finish security and other pre-scans before you install updates again.

Method for Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008

Close any Windows Update or Microsoft Update browser windows.

, type Command Prompt in the Start Search box, and then right-click Command Prompt in the Programs list.
Click Run as Administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.
At the command prompt, type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.
net stop wuauserv
net start wuauserv
Close the Command Prompt window.
Restart the computer.
