SYMPTOMS

When you try to install updates from the Windows Update Web site or from the Microsoft Update Web site, you may receive the following error code:
0x8024D00C

CAUSE

This problem may occur when there is a file version mismatch with Windows Update Agent files.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow the steps that are listed in the following methods. Start with method 1. If method 1 does not resolve the problem, go to method 2.

Method 1: Register the Windows Update files

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008

For Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start

    Start button
    , type notepad in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
  2. Paste the following commands into the new Notepad document:
    REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL /S
    REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL /S
    REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL /S
    REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL /S
    REGSVR32 WUCLTUX.DLL /S
    REGSVR32 WUWEBV.DLL /S
    REGSVR32 JSCRIPT.DLL /S
    REGSVR32 MSXML3.DLL /S
  3. On the File menu, click Save As.
  4. In the Save in box, click Desktop.
  5. In the Save as type box, click All Files.
  6. In the File name box, type Register.bat.
  7. Click Save.
  8. On the File menu, click Exit to exit Notepad.
  9. On your desktop, right-click the Register.bat file and then click Run as administrator.

    User Account Control permission
    If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  10. Try to install the updates again.

Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003

For Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type notepad in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Paste the following commands into the new Notepad document:
    REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL /S
    REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL /S
    REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL /S
    REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL /S
    REGSVR32 WUCLTUX.DLL /S
    REGSVR32 WUWEBV.DLL /S
    REGSVR32 JSCRIPT.DLL /S
    REGSVR32 MSXML3.DLL /S
  3. On the File menu, click Save As.
  4. In the Save in box, click Desktop.
  5. In the Save as type box, click All Files.
  6. In the File name box, type Register.bat.
  7. Click Save.
  8. On the File menu, click Exit to exit Notepad.
  9. On your desktop, double-click the Register.bat file to register the Windows Update files.
  10. Try to install the updates again.

Method 2: Download and install the latest Windows Update Agent
