You receive a "0x80070420" error code when you use the Windows Update or Microsoft Update Web sites to install updates

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install updates from the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site, you may receive the following error code:
0x80070420

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the Windows Update service has stopped during the installation process.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, stop and then restart the Windows Update service. To do this, follow these steps as appropriate for your version of Windows.

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008

  1. Close any Windows Update or Microsoft Update browser windows.
  2. Click Start

    Start button
    , type command prompt in the Start Search box, and then, in the list of results, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as Administrator.

    User Account Control permission
    If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or provide confirmation.
  3. At the command prompt, type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.
    net stop wuauserv

    net start wuauserv

    exit
  4. Try to install the updates again.

Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003

  1. Close any Windows Update or Microsoft Update browser windows.
  2. Click Start , click Run, type command prompt in the Open box, and then click OK.
  3. At the command prompt, type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.
    net stop wuauserv

    net start wuauserv

    exit
  4. Try to install the updates again.
