Cause
The version of wmp.dll is out of sync with what is set in the Windows registry.

Fix it for me
On 64-bit Windows operating systems, this Fix it solution can only fix the problem if both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the Windows Media Player are installed on the machine. The command "unregmp2.exe /UpdateWMPVersion" can only update the registry key value of HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Setup\Installed Versions\wmp.dll, it does not update HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Setup\Installed Versions\wmp.dll.

On Windows Vista:

Reboot your system.

Open cmd.exe as an administrator by selecting Start/All Programs/Accessories.

Right click on Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.

Type in
unregmp2.exe /UpdateWMPVersion -
Press enter.
On Windows XP and Windows 2003 and earlier:
-
Reboot your system.
-
Select Start/Run and type in:
%SystemRoot%\inf\unregmp2.exe /UpdateWMP -
Click Ok.
