SYMPTOMS

On a computer that has the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (SP1) installed, you have a Web site or a Web application project that contains some Web controls. When you view the page in design mode after you recompile the project, you receive an error message that resembles the following:
Error creating control – 'ControlInstanceName [text]' could not be set on property 'PropertyName'

RESOLUTION

Windows XP and Windows Server 2003

To resolve this problem in Windows XP and in Windows Server 2003, apply the hotfix rollup package that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 969612. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
