Register the Windows Update files

If you are running Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, or Windows 2000, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Copy and then paste (or type) the following command in the Ooen box, and then press Enter.

  3. Select the folowing commands, right-click the selected text, and then click Copy.

    REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL /S
    REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL /S
    REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL /S
    REGSVR32 MUCLTUI.DLL /S

    REGSVR32 MUWEB.DLL /S
    REGSVR32 QMGR.DLL /S
    REGSVR32 QMGRPRXY.DLL /S
  4. In Notepad, right-click anywhere in the window, and then click Paste.
  5. Click File, and then click Save As.
  6. In the File name box, type register.bat, and then click All Files in the Save as type box.
  7. Save the register.bat file to your desktop.
  8. On your desktop, double-click the register.bat file to register the Windows Update files.
  9. Try to install updates again.
If you are running Windows 7, Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start

  7. On your desktop, right-click the register.bat file, and then click Run as administrator.

  8. Try to install updates again.

Notes
  • If you are running Windows Vista and the Background Intelligent Transfer Service does not appear in the list of services, click the following link to view the KB article on the Microsoft website and download the update:

Method 3: Restart Windows Services

A 0x80070424 error message may also occur when the following services are stopped. To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, type services.msc in theSearch box, and then press Enter.
  2. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password or click Continue.
  3. Locate Background Intelligent Transfer Service and check the Status.
  4. If the Status is Stopped, right-click Background Intelligent Transfer Services, and then click Start in the menu.
  5. Locate Windows Update and check the Status.
  6. If the Status is Stopped, right-click Windows Update, and then click Start in the menu.
  7. Locate Workstation and check the Status.
  8. If the Status is Stopped, right-click Workstation, and then click Start in the menu.
  9. Close Services.

Method 4: Download Download and install the Windows Update Agent

Method 5: Reinstall Automatic Updates on a computer that is running Windows XP SP2

If you are using a computer that is running Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and your issue has not been resolved, try the following steps

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Copy and then paste (or type) the following command, and then press Enter.

  3. Locate the following folder:
    %windir% \inf
    Note The %windir% placeholder represents the path of the WINDOWS system folder. Typically, C:\WINDOWS is the path of the WINDOWS system folder. The inf folder is a hidden folder. To view the inf folder, follow these steps:
    1. Click Tools, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
    2. In the Advanced settings list, click Show hidden files and folders under Hidden files and folders.
    3. Click Apply, and then click OK.
  4. Double-click the inf folder, right-click au, and then click Install.
  5. Click Browse. If the following conditions are true, locate and then click the %windir% \ServicePackFiles\i386 folder:
    • You installed Windows XP SP2 from a Windows XP SP2 CD that included SP2 as part of the base installation.
    • You downloaded and installed Windows XP SP2 from the Microsoft website.
    • Windows XP SP2 was included with the computer.
    Note If the ServicePackFiles folder is not present on the computer, you can copy the files from a slipstreamed Windows XP SP2 installation CD if you have one.
  6. Click OK to copy the files.
  7. Change the setting on the computer not to display hidden files and folders. To do this, follow these steps:
    • Click Tools, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
    • In the Advanced settings list, click Do not show hidden files and folders under Hidden files and folders.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  8. Restart the computer.
