Applies ToWindows Server 2008 for Itanium-Based Systems Windows Server 2008 Datacenter Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Windows Server 2008 Standard

Symptoms

You use the Windows System Resource Manager to manage the CPU usage and the memory usage on a terminal server that is running Windows Server 2008. In this situation, you find that the CPU usage for the Wmiprvse.exe process is higher than expected.

Cause

The Windows System Resource Manager uses Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) polling queries to check the status for certain key processes, such as the Cluster service. However, these queries consume lots of CPU resources, and the Windows System Resource Manager uses polling intervals of 30 seconds and 60 seconds. As more users log on and as more processes are started, the WMI queries use more and more CPU resources. The query interval that is used when the Accounting feature is enabled can be controlled by a registry value. However, the interval for the Cluster service polling query cannot be adjusted, and this query runs every 60 seconds.

Resolution

You can adjust the interval for the Accounting query by using the PollingInterval registry value. After you apply this following hotfix, you can also change the interval for the Cluster service polling query. You can set the polling intervals to anywhere in the range of one time per second to one time per every 86,400 seconds (1 day). A value of greater than 300 (5 minutes) is recommended only for the ClusterSvcStatusPollInterval registry value and is recommended only when the computer is not a cluster node.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix. If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix. Note If additional issues occur or if any troubleshooting is required, you might have to create a separate service request. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for this specific hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Service and Support telephone numbers or to create a separate service request, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=supportNote The "Hotfix download available" form displays the languages for which the hotfix is available. If you do not see your language, it is because a hotfix is not available for that language.Important Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only one of these products may be listed on the “Hotfix Request” page. To request the hotfix package that applies to both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, just select the product that is listed on the page.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, your computer must run be running one of the following operating systems:

  • Windows Server 2008

  • Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2)

Additionally, your computer must have the Terminal Service role and the Windows System Resource Manager feature installed.

Registry information

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

322756 How to back up and restore the registry in WindowsYou can use the following registry entry to change the interval between the WMI polling queries that are used by the Accounting feature:Location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\WSRM\ParametersName: PollingIntervalType: REG_DWORDValue: Polling query interval in seconds The PollingInterval registry entry specifies the interval in seconds. The default value is 30 (30 seconds). After you install this hotfix, you can use the following registry entry to change the interval between the WMI polling queries:Location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\WSRM\ParametersName: ClusterSvcStatusPollIntervalType: REG_DWORDValue: Polling query interval in seconds The ClusterSvcStatusPollInterval registry entry specifies the interval in seconds. The default value is 300 (5 minutes).
