This security update may be reported as Installed by Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) scans or by Microsoft Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) server reports for some Windows XP or Windows Server 2003-based systems that do not have the SMTP service enabled. This problem occurs because of an error in the Windows update detection logic metadata. The MBSA scan or WSUS report should report Not Applicable when the SMTP service is not installed on these platforms. This is a reporting issue only. Customers who have successfully installed this update do not have to take action.
If you install a version of the security update for the Windows SMTP Service that was released before July 13, 2010, on a Windows Server 2008-based system that has Internet Information Services (IIS) installed, the SMTP configuration options are reset. Any SMTP configuration options that were set before you install the version of the update that was released before July 13, 2010 are lost. Any necessary SMTP configuration options must be manually reapplied after you install the version of the security update that was released before July 13, 2010.
This problem is resolved in the version of this security update that is released on July 13, 2010. After you install the version of the security update that is released on July 13, 2010, all the previous SMTP configuration options are preserved.
If you uninstall this security update MS10-024, the following SMTP settings under the IIS 6.0 configuration (%windir%\system32\inetsrv\MetaBase.xml) will not be preserved. This problem occurs because Smtpsetup.exe uses an older code logic to uninstall the security update. Before you uninstall this security update, please backup your customized SMTP settings for restoration after uninstall.

To back up and restore your customized SMTP settings, follow these steps:
Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 Manager.
In the console tree, right-click the server, and then click Backup/Restore Configuration in the All Tasks dropdown menu.
Click Create Backup in the Backup/Restore Configuration dialog box.
In the configuration backup name field, type a descriptive name to make the entry easily identifiable. For example, type "MS10-024 Backup."
Uninstall security update 976323, and then restart the computer.
After the computer restarts, reopen the Backup/Restore Configuration utility in Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 Manager.
Select the configuration backup name that was created in step 4, and then click Restore.
You receive a message that resembles the following:
Restoring a metabase backup is a lengthy procedure that deletes all your current settings and causes all Internet services to be stopped. When the procedure completes, IIS then restarts these services.
Are you sure you want to continue?
Click Yes to continue with the restore.

Service Pack 1 is integrated into the release version of Windows Server 2008. Therefore, RTM milestone files apply only to Windows Vista. RTM milestone files have a 6.0.0000.xxxxxx version number.
GDR service branches contain only those fixes that are widely released to address widespread, critical issues. LDR service branches contain hotfixes in addition to widely released fixes.
The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately. MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are critical to maintaining the state of the updated component. The security catalog files (attributes not listed) are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.

Additional file information for Windows Server 2008
Additional files for all supported x86-based versions of Windows Server 2008
The files that apply to a specific product, milestone (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table.
Collapse this tableExpand this table
Version
Product
Milestone
Service branch
6.1.7600.16xxx
Windows Server 2008 R2
RTM
GDR
6.1.7600.20xxx
Windows Server 2008 R2
RTM
LDR
GDR service branches contain only those fixes that are widely released to address widespread, critical issues. LDR service branches contain hotfixes in addition to widely released fixes.
The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 R2" section. MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are critical to maintaining the state of the updated component. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
