This article describes an update that enables the support of Enhanced Storage devices on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.
Enhanced Storage devices are devices that support the IEEE 1667 protocol. The IEEE 1667 protocol describes various functions, such as authentication at the hardware level of the storage device. Typically, these devices let you control who can access the data on the device by using a password or by using a certificate if the device is used in a workplace.
This update enables Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 to support Enhanced Storage devices in the following ways:
Support for passwords and for silo drivers
This lets you use a password to unlock and to access an Enhanced Storage device from a computer.
Provides a password user interface
This provides a user interface for creating passwords, recalling forgotten passwords and resetting the device.
Provides credential caching functionality
This provides support for caching credentials on the computer. This makes accessing data on the Enhanced Storage device from a computer more convenient from a computer.
