FSExtend tool fails to extend a LUN in Windows Server 2008

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 in a storage area network (SAN).

  • You try to extend a logical unit number (LUN) by using the FSExtend tool.

  • The SAN is under a heavy I/O situation, and the storage space that is available in the subsystem is low.

In this scenario, the LUN extension operation fails, and you are prompted to run CHKDSK. Additionally, a disk corruption event that resembles the following is logged:

Note If you run CHKDSK, the FSExtend tool can extend the LUN.
