INTRODUCTION
Cumulative update package 6 for SQL Server Compact 3.5 Service Pack 2 contains hotfixes for issues that have been fixed after the release of Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 Service Pack 2 (SP2).
Note This build of this cumulative update package is also known as build 3.5.8088.00.
We recommend that you test hotfixes before you deploy them in a production environment. Because the builds are cumulative, each new update release contains all the hotfixes and all the security updates that were included with the previous SQL Server Compact 3.5 update release. We recommend that you consider applying the most recent update release.

How to obtain this cumulative update package
A supported cumulative update package is now available from Microsoft. However, this update package is intended to correct only the problems that are described in this article. Apply this cumulative update package only to computers that are experiencing these problems. This cumulative update package may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by any of these problems, we recommend that you wait for the next SQL Server Compact 3.5 service pack that contains the hotfixes in this cumulative update package.
If the cumulative update package is available for download, the top of this Knowledge Base article has a "Hotfix download available" section. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the cumulative update package.

Notes
- To install the Windows Installer files for the 64-bit version of the desktop runtime, you have to install the Windows Installer files for the 32-bit version of the desktop runtime first. If you perform a Build to build upgrade, you still must install the Windows Installer files for the 32-bit version of the desktop runtime first.
- The product functions correctly only if the 64-bit and 32-bit versions of the Windows Installer files that are installed have the same version number.

How to install this cumulative update package
This cumulative update package is for the SQL Server Compact replication components that are installed on a computer that is running Internet Information Services (IIS). These components are used to synchronize data with SQL Server 2005, with SQL Server 2008, with SQL Server 2008 R2, and with SQL Server "Denali."
32-bit and 64-bit desktop versions of SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2
To install this cumulative update package for 32-bit and 64-bit desktop versions of SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2, follow these steps:
Download and locate the Ssceruntime-enu.exe file.
Double-click the Ssceruntime-enu.exe file.
In the SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2 Self-Extractor dialog box, specify a folder, and then click OK to extract files in to the folder.
In the folder, double-click the Ssceruntime_x86-enu.msi file or the Ssceruntime_x64-enu.msi file to install the update.
Note Install the Windows Installer files for the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the cumulative update package 6 SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2 on x64-based computers.
Notes
If the 32-bit version of the MSI file is installed on a 64-bit computer, the existing SQL Server Compact 3.5 applications may fail. Therefore, we recommend that developers attach the 32-bit and 64-bit Windows Installer files to their applications and that developers install both files on 64-bit computers.

If you perform a build-to-build upgrade, you must still install the 32-bit version of the SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2 desktop runtime first. The product functions correctly only if the 64-bit and 32-bit versions of the Windows Installer files that are installed have the same version number.
SQL Server Compact 3.5 Server Tools Service Pack 2 (SP2)
To install this cumulative update package for SQL Server Compact 3.5 Server Tools SP2, follow these steps:
- Download the Ssceservertools-enu.msi file.
- Reset Internet Information Services (IIS).
- Double-click the Ssceservertools-enu.msi file to install the update.
- Locate the Sqlcesa35.dll file in the Server Tools installation path, and move it to the virtual directory location.
SQL Server Compact 3.5 Developer SDK Service Pack 2 (SP2)
To install this cumulative update package for SQL Server Compact 3.5 Developer SDK SP2, follow these steps:
- Download the Sscedeviceruntime-enu.msi file.
- Double-click the Sscedeviceruntime-enu.msi file to install the update.
How to uninstall this cumulative update package
To uninstall this cumulative update package for 32-bit and 64-bit desktop versions of SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2, for SQL Server Compact 3.5 Server Tools SP2, and for SQL Server Compact 3.5 Developer SDK SP2, follow these steps:
In Control Panel, open the Add or Remove Programs item.
Note If you are running Windows 7, open the Programs and Features item in Control Panel.
Locate the entries that were installed by the package. The following packages are listed together with their installed entries:
- 32-bit and 64-bit desktop versions of SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2
Locate the entries for "Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2 ENU" and for "Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2 X64 ENU." - SQL Server Compact 3.5 Server Tools SP2
Locate the entries for "Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2 Server Tools ENU" and for "Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2 x64 Server Tools ENU." - SQL Server Compact 3.5 Developer SDK SP2
Locate the entry for "Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2 for Devices English."
- 32-bit and 64-bit desktop versions of SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2
Right-click and select Uninstall for each entry to uninstall this cumulative update package.
Note Cumulative update packages for SQL Server Compact install the whole product. Therefore, step 3 uninstalls SQL Server Compact 3.5. If you want to reinstall cumulative update package 6 for SQL Server Compact 3.5 Service Pack 2, you must run the Windows Installer files that you used to install the cumulative update package again. To reinstall SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2, visit the following Microsoft website to download the Windows Installer files:
